Des Moines Yacht Club First Mates Minutes May 27, 2009
The First Mates meeting called to order by President Robin Miller at 7:33p.m. Minutes: Minutes were approved as read (see attached) Financial Report: See attached Vice President’s Report: None to present Ways and Means: Judy Pepper -- sales reports a profit --$452.12. New designs for women’s wear were shown. Sunshine: A sympathy card was sent to Tamara for the loss of her mother; to Val for back injury and subsequent surgery; and to Rose McKinney for Kidney surgery. It was reported that Cathy Reece had surgery also. Kitchen request: Hotplate/induction burner for the upstairs meeting area was discussed. Robin mentioned this might be an option that would heat items without the risk of the heating unit causing burns. Jane Rothwell commented that this had been a discussion when the kitchen upstairs was redesigned. Marilee commented that there had been a hotplate unit however it was not used and thus it was removed. Jane suggested a roaster might serve the purpose. Sunshine Committee: Thank you cards were received from Judy Pepper and Tamara Gardner and circulated to the group to read. First Mates Cruise Report: The Brownsville Cruise sign- up sheet is available downstairs. Knitting Class: Monica Guthrie reported a knitting class will be held June 18th from 2:30-4:30 with a second class from 6:30-8:30. Beginning knitters will receive help. The class will be in the retail space next to where Benson’s was located. Attendees may sign-up at the store. The class price is $10.00. Monica also visited the new interior decorating shop (by Butlers). The store owner is willing to talk us about fabrics for indoor and outdoor furniture options. Past President’s Dinner: June 24th – The dinner will be a garden party. Robin sent around a sign-up sheet for helpers with this event. Old Business: First Mate’s Dinner of the year was attended by 38 people and the evening was a wonderful success. Everyone had a great time. New Business: Wednesday night there will be a reception held for the Dollars for Scholars recipients. First mates are asked to report about 6:30. First Mates, please sit at the table nearest the kitchen. The event starts at 7:00 p.m. The DMYC recipients are Katie House and Megan Morrison. Six individuals applied for the scholarship. The qualifiers were ranked in order of scholastic achievement, recommendations, and community service. The scholarships provided were $750 each. Good and Welfare: Chat and Chowder – the door prize winners were: Judy Pepper, Carmen, Monica, and Sue—attendees at the Chat and Chowder luncheon. The quilt raffle will occur June 13th. Tickets are available for purchase. Molly discussed the Tom and Jerry and Awards celebration. Different ideas were presented – classical music, old time rock and roll band, and/or changing of the amount of time taken for the awards presentation. The event takes place the second Sunday of December (or this year, 12/14). Swabbies, pizza and crafts will be available. The Children’s Party, the Lighted Boat Parade, occurs the week before which may also negate the need for sitters upstairs. Discussion occurred regarding options to create information and interest for new members. Draw for the Pot: Carmen was the drawer and Jean Atwell was the winner of the $16.75 draw for the pot. Peggy Webber moved the meeting should be adjourned. The vote was unanimous.
